The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce is deeply concerned about the significant economic impact the latest U.S. tariffs will have on Saskatchewan businesses and workers. For some sectors, the consequences will be devastating.

Late Friday night, trade negotiations between Canada and the United States collapsed. The breakdown came over what Canadian officials described as uneconomic and unfair U.S. demands that fell short of the minimal tariff scenario Canada sought.

The Chamber supports the federal and provincial government’s position that Canada made the right decision to stand firm. While these tariffs cause real hardship for affected Canadian businesses and workers, accepting untenable terms would have compromised Canada’s sovereignty and our freedom to negotiate independent trade relationships with other nations.

As an export-driven province, our prosperity depends on access to markets around the world. We stand in solidarity with affected Canadian businesses and call on federal and provincial governments to provide robust support to affected sectors.
