Orange Shirt Day honours the survivors of residential schools, those who never returned home, and the families and communities impacted. It serves as an important opportunity for all Saskatchewan residents to engage in reconciliation by listening, reading, attending events, and supporting initiatives that recognize the harms of Canada’s Indian Residential School system.
The 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Final Report provides a comprehensive history of residential schools in Canada and underscores their ongoing impact. By reading testimonies and learning about Canada’s history with Indigenous peoples, we can all contribute to the process of reconciliation.
Reconciliation is a collective responsibility for everyone in Canada. Listening to and learning from Indigenous knowledge keepers, survivors, and their families allows us to reflect on the history of the land we share.
September 30 is an opportunity for Indigenous voices to be amplified and heard. The Saskatchewan Chamber has compiled a newsletter full of information on how to get involved. If you are unable to attend events on September 30, we’ve also provided a list of resources to guide you on your reconciliation journey.
