Financial Literacy – a Huge Step Forward for Students!
Regina, SK – On Thursday, February 6, 2020, the Government of Saskatchewan announced that financial literacy will be available across all high schools in the province. Record debt levels and high numbers of personal and corporate bankruptcies are an indication that enhanced financial literacy education is vital to ensure the health and well-being of Canadians and the Canadian economy.
“The chamber network, together with the Saskatchewan Financial Literacy Network and its partners in the financial industry, have long advocated for greater access to financial education. It would not be an understatement to say that this opportunity means that people will have better control over their finances and will ultimately achieve more success in their lives,” said Steve McLellan, CEO of the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce (SCC).
“We congratulate the Ministry of Education, and the teachers who have been the true champions behind this important step forward in the education of Saskatchewan’s youth,” added McLellan.
The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce has been a long-time advocate for financial literacy education in the K-12 curriculum and helped launch the Saskatchewan Financial Literacy Network (SFLN) in 2018. Increased interest in financial literacy education is due to the guidance and support of the financial services sector and other interested businesses.
The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce serves as the voice of business and represents the interests of over 10,000 individual businesses, industry associations, and local Chambers across the province through the Chamber network.
